      Frequently Asked Questions

Here at Cleveland Skydiving, we understand that to the uninitiated, skydiving out of a perfectly good airplane may seem a little more like leaping into the unknown. That's why we have put together this list of frequently asked skydiving questions to help you know what to expect on your jump!

Q. How fast do I fall?
A. Freefall averages 120 miles per hour or 176 feet per second. Many skydivers, however, can attain body positions that allow them to fall at over 200 miles per hour!

Q. Are the landings hard?
A. Normally there is less impact than jumping off of a chair.

Q. What clothing should I wear?
A. Dress in casual, comfortable clothing such as jeans or shorts and a tee shirt. We will provide you with a jumpsuit to wear on your skydive. Tennis shoes are recommended.

Q. Is there a weight limit?
A. We can safely take someone up to 220 lbs for men and 200 lbs for women, though exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis. Jumpers should be in reasonably good physical condition in order to make a skydive.

Q. Are there any age limitations?
A. You must be at least 16 years old with parental consent. There is no upper age limit as long as you are reasonably healthy. People have even jumped at the age of 86!

Q. Can I breathe in freefall?
A. Yes, there is plenty of air around you.

Q. What does it feel like?
A. We cannot explain the unique sensations you will feel during your skydive, but we will tell you that it will be your most exhilarating experience yet!

Q. How long do I fall?
A. You will freefall for up to 60 seconds.

Q. What if my parachute doesn't open?
A. This is the most common question asked by first-time jumpers.
By FAA law, all intentional parachute jumps must be made with both a main and reserve parachute. In other words, you have a second (or spare) canopy in the rare event that the first one fails to open properly.

The reserve parachute must be inspected and repacked every 120 days by an FAA rated parachute Rigger - even if it has not been used during that time. The student's main canopy is always packed by a rigger or under a rigger's direct supervision by experienced packers.

Cleveland Skydiving also employs additional safety features to ensure canopy deployment such as Automatic Activation Devices (AAD) and Reserve Static Lines (RSL) which add still more layers of safety.

Q. Will I be scared?
A. It is normal to be apprehensive about jumping from an airplane. The airplane ride up is typically where students feel the most anxiety, but few jumpers report feeling anything but exhilaration once they've left that door!

Q. What height will we jump from?
A. Tandem passengers and AFF students will dive from over two miles above the ground!

Q. How experienced are the instructors?
A. All of the instructors at Ohio Skydiving are professionals that are certified by the United States Parachute Association. Instructors must complete a minimum of 500 solo skydives and an intense training course in order to be certified as a USPA Skydiving Instructor. Most of our instructors have each made literally thousands of skydives apiece!

Q. How long will my first skydive take?
A. For a Tandem skydive, plan on spending about 2-3 hours at Cleveland Skydiving; for Static Line and AFF students taking the first-time skydiving course, plan on spending most of the day.

Q. What if it rains?
A. AFF & Static Line students will complete the classroom portion of their skydiving training, regardless of the weather. Tandem skydivers are simply rescheduled for another date.

Q. I received my training and did not get to jump due to weather. When can I jump?
A. You will receive a Rain Check that is good for one year from the date of your training. We encourage you to come back and jump as soon as possible anytime during our normal business hours or by appointment.

Q. When is Cleveland Skydiving open?
A. 7 days a week, 365 days a year; weather permitting.

Q. Can I get licensed?
A. Yes, Cleveland Skydiving will train you from your first jump through your expert skydiving license.

Q. Do I need a reservation?
A. Reservations are not required, but are highly encouraged. If you reserve a time for your jump, our staffing will be more easily prepared to meet all of your needs. Click Here for our Online Reservation Form, or call 1-800-TLC-JUMP to reserve your time now!
